Upcoming Centenary Celebrations

Our Society celebrates it’s Centenary this year, and we have a line-up of events to honour our Founder, Ms Mallika Hewavitarne, mother of the illustrious Anagarika Dharmapala.

On the 8th of October we will be having an event 'Siyawasaka Jayagrahanaya' at the Jasmine Hall of the BMICH. The Hon. Prime Minister, Mr Mahinda Rajapakse, will be the Chief Guest and Mr. Karu Jayasuriya will be our Guest of Honour. A commemorative stamp depicting our Founder, and a first day cover will be issued at the event. The first copy of our souvenir detailing the inspiring journey of a hundred years will be presented to the Hon. Prime Minister. The line-up of events will include a Service Awards Ceremony and a multimedia presentation on 'Siyawasaka Jayagrahanaya - an Inspiring Journey of a Century'. Items from the elders of Mallika Home and the children of Parakrama and Sneha will complement the day's proceedings.

An almsgiving to 100 monks is planned for the 27th of February 2021. This is the day on which the Mallika Home was opened, by admitting two elders a century ago.

In October 1920 a group of Colombo's leading Buddhist citizens met at the residence of Ms Mallika Hewavitharana at Aloe Avenue in Colpetty. This meeting saw the creation of the ‘Mallika Anatha Nivasa Samithiya’ later to be known as the ‘Mallika Nivasa Samithiya’.

Over the years many Executive Committees have taken the Society forward, until today it consists of three Homes offering care and shelter to destitute elders and abandoned or orphaned infants and children, and two Paying Homes for elderly ladies .

Over almost ten decades much has been achieved. Now to coincide with the Centenary the Executive Committee is planning to put up a two-storey building which will enable us to expand and improve the services we already provide.

Plans have been drawn up by our architect, who has kindly volunteered her services on behalf of the Society. The cost will be in the region of Rs 75 million.

We cordially invite all philanthropists to contribute towards this worthy project. We will give our donors the opportunity to perpetuate their donation by engraving their name on a plaque in the new building (this would apply to all donations over Rs 250,000/-).

Kindly forward all donations to our Building Fund account:
